Acupuncture

Acupuncture encourages the body to promote natural healing and improve functioning by inserting needles and applying heat or electrical stimulation to precise acupuncture points. For 2,000 years, more people have been successfully treated with acupuncture than by all other health modalities.

Medical acupuncture is performed by a doctor licensed in Western medicine who is also trained in acupuncture as a specialty. The World Health Organization recognizes acupuncture for a range of medical problems including digestive, respiratory, neurological, muscular and reproductive disorders. It is especially useful for physical problems related to chronic pain, tension and emotions.

How does acupuncture work?

Most people feel little or no pain when acupuncture needles are inserted. The needles are thin and disposable to eliminate any chance of infection. The number of treatments varies by person. Complex conditions may require one to two treatments per week for several weeks. Acute problems require fewer visits. Maintenance sessions may involve four sessions per year.

The classical Chinese explanation for the success of acupuncture is that acupuncture needles release blocked energy within the energy channels (meridians) throughout the body. Modern science speculates that acupuncture needles stimulate the release of neurotransmitters to the muscles, spinal cord and brain. These chemicals can change the perception of pain or may trigger hormones that normally regulate the body.
