I’m not just some doctor looking to make a buck passing down the same old top down medical information based on book learning. I’m Dr. Pamela Avery, a medical physician specializing in the treatment of pain.

And I want to make a difference in the world by helping people who suffer with pain. I specialize in the field of medicine called anesthesia, the treatment of acute and chronic pain. I have spent over 30 years relieving the pain of surgery, injury and childbirth. During my medical training, I specialized in helping people who suffered with chronic pain.

I admit it. I began treating pain like most doctors. I prescribed pills, gave shots and sent people to physical therapy. But over and over again, I saw the same disappointing results Some people would get a little better for a little while, but soon the pain was back and, worse yet,

  • became a new pain
  • in a new place or
  • simply never got better.
Then I would temporarily alleviate the pain with another round of pills, injections and medical devices. It was as frustrating for me as a doctor as it was for my patients. Many even felt DEFEATED, like you might now.

But, I tried something different…

AND IT WORKED

Well, kinda…

Alternative Medicine Not the Answer Either

I tried what the medical community refers to as "alternative approaches" to pain. I studied acupuncture and opened a complementary medicine clinic with my local hospital.

I used my new tool, acupuncture, with great success, but found a significant number of patients continued to need treatments week after week just to get a few days or even hours of relief. This was expensive for the patients and not satisfying for me as the doctor. I wanted my patients to do well and feel healthy without depending on me week after week as the only temporary relief to their pain.

I couldn’t even go on a vacation because so many patients felt lost and confused as well as suffered major flare-ups in their pain when I was out of the office. Some of them even had to be hospitalized or treated in emergency rooms with strong narcotics to bring them relief until I was back at work.

Then something happened to me on a personal level that changed my whole perspective of medicine and healing.

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

I began to suffer with chronic pain myself!

At first it was a nuisance, but over time it became a constant pain in my shoulder. It was always there, nagging at me, and making it hard for me to do the things I loved – gardening, playing the piano, knitting, and exercising. It worsened over time to the point where it affected my sleeping.

I tried everything – steroid injections, physical therapy, medications, acupuncture, chiropractic, massage, even magnets. I spent 10 years and more that $20,000 to rid myself of my mysterious pain.

Some things helped for a while, others only made my pain worse. Medications left me groggy and unable to think clearly.

To make matters worse...

I was depressed!

I learned to meditate and found I could at least improve how I responded to the pain, even if I could not eliminate the pain. Life was looking a little better.

Then catastrophe struck!

The Final Straw to Break the Camel’s Back

I was bringing in the groceries one Saturday morning when I twisted my right wrist in a strange direction trying to open the door. I had immediate pain and experience hand spasms for several minutes.

Although my wrist was strained and tender for a few days I was sure it would FULLY recover and be fine.

However, that was NOT the case.

My wrist continued to bother me off and on, getting worse with each new episode of pain. Being right handed, the pain made my life incredibly difficult. At times, the hand was completely weak and I couldn’t hold a pencil much less my acupuncture needles.

I couldn’t give anesthesia in the operating room because I couldn’t perform the many varied manual tasks required of an anesthesiologist to keep my patients alive and well during surgery. I had to take time off from my work.

I continued to search for a cure.

An MRI revealed the source of the problem. A small bone in the wrist of my hand had taken a bruise and was actually beginning to die. The actual diagnosis was bone necrosis. "Doesn’t that sound nice?" If it continued, I could be unable to use my hand and require a surgery to fuse the bones of the wrist together, making it IMPOSSIBLE to continue my career.

I was frightened and depressed. I had 2 children in college and the usual middle age expenses – mortgage, tuition, car payments, etc.

I gained weight and felt even worse. My annual physical revealed a middle-aged woman who was overweight with high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol. Then something wonderful happened!

The Nutrition Prescription

A nurse who was a patient of mine suggested I try some natural supplements. She had used them for her headaches and they were working well.

I was doubtful.

I had a whole cabinet in my kitchen filled with vitamins and supplements. None had really ever helped. I took them when I remembered and was totally overwhelmed when faced with the choices at the health food store since nutrition wasn’t taught in medical school (believe it or not!)

I had read a few books that left me more confused than ever. It sounded like I needed every pill on the shelves as I read the labels. However, my patient, the nurse, kept at me to give it a try for myself as well as my patients.

I decided to educate myself a bit on the proper use of the supplements and go ahead and try it more to placate her than expecting a result. To my surprise, within a few days, my shoulder and wrist began to feel better. By the end of the first month, my pain was decreased by at least 75%! Some days I actually forgot I had any pain!

I was cautiously optimistic but began suggesting natural supplements to some of my patients. When they too began to show improvement, I decided to learn more.

I studied and went to medical seminars. I joined the teaching faculty of a nutraceutical company where I learned even more valuable information and the science behind it.

I lost the weight I had gained and felt even better. I started eating the right kinds of foods and doing the right kind of movement for my body.

I was amazed!

I lost over 25 pounds in about 4 months.

I went from a size 14 to a 6! 

But most of all, I noticed another strange thing. My minor aches and pains as well as the pain in my shoulder and wrist were all but gone. I only occasionally noticed them if I ate poorly or skipped my supplements. My sleep began to improve and my blood pressure as well as cholesterol returned to normal. I was thrilled!
