Nutritional Supplementation
Science and medicine has started to pay attention to the need for good nutrition and appropriate supplementation. We are beginning to understand the role nutrition plays in the development of diseases of affluence chronic degenerative disorders. Disease of affluence simply means we have enough money to enjoy lifestyles that are not healthy, including eating the
wrong amounts of the wrong foods at the wrong time!
All the while, you are time-pressured and chronically stressed! This includes diseases from heart disease to diabetes to arthritis and even cancer.
The scientific information to help guide you is scattered throughout various medical disciplines and scientific journals, making it hard for even the best physician to keep up-to-date and capable of making creditable recommendations, much less the lay person. So here are some fundamental guidelines for everyone to incorporate into their supplementation routine.
In 2002, Harvard medical school researchers concluded that due to poor eating habits and nutritionally depleted food sources
every American should be taking a quality multi-vitamin and mineral a day.
In addition, they concluded that due to common mal-absorption issues,
elderly Americans should be taking 2 multi-vitamins and minerals per day. They published their data in the respected Journal of the American Medical Association or JAMA.

In 2007, the well-respected American Heart Association (AHA) concluded that
every American needs 2 servings or more of cold water fatty fish per week! If you cant eat fish, have a history of heart disease or high lipids they recommend that you then supplement.
Use fish oil capsules or other sources of omega 3 like flaxseed. The AHA published their findings in the prestigious medical journal Circulation.
Even if you eat a healthy diet, you may need supplementation on two additional counts. The database of the US Department of Agriculture shows some depletion in nutritient content of many of our foods. This may be explained by many variables soil depletion, selection of plant variants richer in yield and appearance over nutritional content and selection of cultivors resistant to disease with perhaps lesser nutritional content. An excellent review can be accessed in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.
In addition, we now know from the Human Genome Project that many of us have genetic variants present that leave our bodies deficient in essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. This makes it essential to supplement with quality vitamins and minerals.
